“Yoga is a light, which once lit can never fade out. The more you practice, the brighter the flame that burns within you.”
B.K.S. Iyengar
The Iyengar Yoga method is known for its focus on precision, alignment, sequencing, and use of props. The method was created and developed over 75 years by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014). Iyengar studied and practiced yoga continuously for over 85 years and was universally acknowledged as the world’s most outstanding yoga teacher.
The Iyengar method is based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga, presented in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, over 2,500 years ago. Iyengar Yoga helps to achieve mental, physical, and spiritual stability and strength. B.K.S Iyengar created props, such as bolsters, benches, bricks, straps, and sandbags, to help students experience the full benefits of asana and pranayama.
In an Iyengar Yoga class, you will hear detailed instructions from the teacher, who will often demonstrate poses to help students deepen their understanding of the postures and develop an overall awareness of body and mind. You will also be encouraged to work in your own capacity, and deal with injuries or conditions you may face.
The detailed and precise instructions keep the student’s mind concentrated on the actions he or she needs to do to perform a correct asana, this develops mindfulness and turns the practice into a meditation in action.
